Relatively new to the Australian Lottery Scene, Powerball was introduced in 1996 as an alternative to the midweek Tattslotto and is based on the highly popular American Powerball game.
The weekly Powerball draw takes place every Thursday night at 8:29PM AEST and is broadcast Australia wide on the 7 network. Results are also published on page two of the metropolitan daily newspapers.
Powerball can be played not only by the locals but also by Australians living in other countries.
How to play Powerball
A Powerball draw uses two barrels to draw a total of six numbers. Five numbers are drawn from the first barrel which contains 45 numbers and an additional number - the Powerball, is drawn from a second barrel also containing 45 numbers. The aim is to correctly guess all five numbers drawn from the first barrel plus the Powerball from the second barrel to win the major prize jackpot. Division 1 winners are guaranteed a prize of at least $3 million for their winning combination. Powerball offers slightly better odds overall for winning any prize than Saturday Lotto, partly due to its seven-division structure.
Each division is divided as follows:
| Division | Winning Numbers Required |
| 1st division | 5 + Powerball |
| 2nd division | 5 numbers |
| 3rd division | 4 + Powerball |
| 4th division | 3 + Powerball |
| 5th division | 4 numbers |
| 6th division | 2 + Powerball |
| 7th division | 3 numbers |
